I found this mental health tag on Lauren’s blog This Stuff Is Golden and felt like it would be a good thing to participate in and share, so here I am!
1. WHAT IS YOUR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE?
Lifelong anxiety in varying degrees with occasional bouts of depression thrown in. I’m also prone to postnatal depression which I definitely experienced in full force with Master 4.
2. DO YOU HAVE MEDICATION AND/OR THERAPY?
I used to be on Sertraline and then Paroxetine in 2016 but I haven’t been on any medication since the end of 2016. 2019 might be the year I start taking medication again. I also go to therapy one evening a week after work with a lovely private therapist who really works for me.
3. WHAT THERAPY/MEDICATION HAVE YOU TRIED AND HAS ANY WORKED FOR YOU?
I believe that there is probably a medication that can work for me but I am yet to find it. Sertraline messed up my sex life and Paroxetine had so many side-effects it was ridiculous and then withdrawals even after being weaned off… never again. I’ve seen counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and CBT therapists since I was around 14. My current therapist is integrative and relational, drawing upon Humanistic Counselling, Developmental-Psychodynamic Counselling and CBT.
4. HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD PROBLEMS FOR?
I believe I have had anxiety in different forms for as long as I can remember. It has developed in it’s manifestation since I had children and probably reached its worst point in between medications in 2016. My depression is reactional – I had it for a lot of my teen years and as a side-effect of coming off of Sertraline cold-turkey.
5. DO YOUR FAMILY/FRIENDS KNOW?
The one’s who matter and care to know, know. I have always spoken about it on social media etc so if they don’t know then they weren’t paying attention.
6. DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR WORK AND DAILY LIVING?
I lost my job in 2016 due to my anxiety and depression and was out of work for 18 months. I returned to work in January last year part-time. I’m now working full-time and have seen a bit of a dip in my mental health. With the recent events of my mum passing as well, I’m not doing so great. I am struggling to focus at work on some days or to even get there at all.
7. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL CALM?
Sleep. Bubble baths. Getting lost in a fiction book. Holding my kids or having Mr.A hold me.
8. WHAT DO YOU DO IN CRISIS?
Turn to Mr.A if I can. Try to do a grounding exercise my therapist taught me. Try to take deep breaths. Try to take as much time for myself as is possible.
9. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS SUFFERING?
To know that telling someone you trust is the best first step. Knowing you have shared it with someone is a relief. Your GP can help you if you let them and whether you want/need medication, therapy or just support from your family – it’s okay to not be okay. My motto now is just to take things one day at a time.
10. WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE?
My children always. Mr.A has an amazing sense of humor and can always make me smile too. Watching videos of my children when they were younger.
11. DESCRIBE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE IN 5 WORDS
Exhausting, isolating, frustrating, negative and unpredictable.
12. INSERT A PICTURE TO MAKE PEOPLE SMILE
